Healthy and Non-Healthy Relationships

A healthy relationship has:

  • mutual respect;
  • equality;
  • trust;
  • communication; and
  • freedom.

An unhealthy relationship has:

  • disrespect;
  • fear;
  • jealousy; and
  • possessiveness.

Warning Signs of Abuse

  • Does your partner threaten to hurt you?
  • Does your partner threaten to kill himself or the kids if you leave him?
  • Do you feel like you are walking on “egg shells” all of the time?
  • Are you afraid that your partner will hurt you?
  • Is your partner jealous of your friends and family?
  • Does you partner control who you can see and can’t see?
  • Does your partner make you feel stupid?
  • Does your partner become angry if you don’t behave the way he or she wants you to?
  • Does your partner threaten to hurt your pet(s)?
  • Has your partner hurt your pet(s)?
  • Does your partner make you jealous by saying he or she is seeing someone else?
  • Does your partner control how much money you spend?
  • Do you worry that you will make your partner angry?
  • Does your partner expect you to give up things that are important to you?
  • Does your partner force you into having sex?
  • Does your partner insult you, or put you down in public?
  • Do you cry a lot or feel unhappy?
  • Does your partner always check up on you or ask you where you’ve been?
  • Does your partner blow disagreements out of proportion?
  • Does your partner blame you for his/her problems?
  • Does your partner abuse drugs and/or alcohol?
